This week’s topic comes from Erin at Living Made Healthy – she suggested we talk about the reasons we love living where we do now, or where we grew up. Would be great to learn a little bit about where everyone lives.
I have chosen 5 things about my home town, you can choose as many as you want.
I grew up in a small town called Baileyton Alabama so I'm about as southern as you can get. it was a dry county and I lived on a dirt road and yes I have used an out-house, milked a cow, killed/ate my own chickens, canned fruits/veggies and the like. I've also churned butter, slopped a hog and done just about anything you can think of that's a stereotype of southern living! lolol
here's a few stats................
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.8 km2), of which 5.3 square miles (13.6 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 1.06%, is water.[1]
Elevation: 981 feet (299 m)
There were 281 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,000, and the median income for a family was $41,563. Males had a median income of $30,083 versus $20,417 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,696. About 10.3% of families and 16.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.1% of those under age 18 and 22.5% of those age 65 or over.

Baileyton was settled in 1870 by Robert Bailey, a farmer from Georgia. A post office was established in Baileyton in 1883. The town was incorporated in 1973.[2]Geography[edit]

There were 305 housing units at an average density of 57.4 per square mile (22.1/km2). I have driven/ridden through Cullman county countless times, and seen the signs for the Grotto. I had no idea Bailyton was there.
ReplyDeleteA couple of months ago as we were coming home from visiting with 65MD's peeps in Tuscaloosa, I saw a billboard advertising the All Steak Restaurant in Cullman county. I made 65MD stop so we could eat there!! That is the most time I have spent in that county.

ave maria grotto is beautiful, just stop on a cool day as it's all outside! baileyton is a lumberyard , post office, store with a blinking light! lol
